Moho – Industrial wood is a common material used in furniture production. Facing the increasing demand for furniture; With limited natural resources, using the wood industry is considered a great solution. Not only protecting the environment, natural resources but also meeting the needs of interior use of consumers. So what is industrial wood? Advantages and disadvantages? Let’sMOHO Furniture Find out the information below
1. What is the wood industry?
Compared with “natural wood”, which is taken from the trunk of the wood, “industrial wood” is a combination of acacia, chemicals, and many wood chips to create wood panels. In simple terms, industrial wood is made from recycled and recycled materials, tops of natural trees. Industrial wood is usually made up of two basic parts: wood core (internal material) and top surface coating.
2. Types of industrial wood
2.1 MFC Wood
MFC stands for Melamine Faced Chipboard. The materials that make up this wood core are planted timber (forests are allowed to be exploited). Types of timber are mainly short-term harvests from acacia, white pine, and rubber. Then it is taken to the factory, through the process of shredding combined with glue; Pressed into sheets under high pressure and covered with Melamine surface to protect. This layer has an anti-scratch and water repellent effect. The surface has a smooth color or incorporates wood grain printing technology to look very nice.
Advantages
- Environmentally friendly, ensuring consumer health
- Resists warping, flaking and termites
- Good moisture resistance, suitable for the climate of some regions or heavy rain
- Melamine surface has a variety of colors, easy to apply in the design
- Good price
- Easy to clean thanks to smooth Melamine surface
Defect
- Low water resistance if exposed to water long
- The inner glue is easy to break down without advanced production process and modern technology
- Surface and bearing capacity are not made of natural wood
Application
Common MFC wood: materials used to process products such as desks, student tables, etc.
Green core MFC wood: the material used to produce high-class furniture, waterproof, moisture-proof, and termite thanks to the outstanding green warm glue.
2.2 MDF Wood
MDF is the abbreviation for Medium Density Fiberboard – meaning that the wood is made of compression with an average compression ratio. MDF is made from wood chips, twigs to create wood pulp, combined with glue, adhesive chemicals and wood protection against termites. Compared with MFC, MDF is manufactured from wood pulp material so the surface is smooth and free of large rough wood chips.
Advantages
- MDF is easy to process, lower price than natural wood
- High adhesion, suitable for products that need decoration in a variety of colors
- Easily create curved designs, flexible products
- Flat, smooth surface, wider than natural wood, suitable for designing large-size products without joining
- Fast processing time, save much cost
Defect
- Poor water resistance
- Low hardness so easily scratched
- Because of the thickness, the pair must combine several panels together
- Can not directly be painted on the wall, must be combined with wood grain printing technology on the surface
- Formaldehyde content in glue is easily higher than safe level without a strict, professional testing process
Application
MDF industrial wood is often covered with Melamine or Laminate to create motifs and patterns of the wood to apply in production and interior decoration such as tables, chairs, wardrobes, beds, shelves …
3. Common industrial wood surfaces
Melamine surface: is a layer of Melamine resin-embedded paper. This glue helps to increase the durability of the product, reduce fire resistance, increase resistance to mold moisture, waterproofing for interior products.
Laminate surface: Higher than Melamine, it is composed of 3 layers: kraft paper, decorative paper, and coating pressed by HPL technology – the most advanced technology.
Acrylic surface: The surface cover is refined from petroleum. Acrylic panels usually have 3 layers: ABS plastic, clear plastic, and outer coating.
Veneer surface: the origin of natural wood is sliced into a thickness of 0.3-0.6mm, and then pasted onto the wooden surface. It has all the characteristics of natural wood: beautiful wood grain, elastic after drying.
4. Is industrial wood safe?
The wood industry is an optimal solution to replace natural wood in the face of exhaustion of natural resources. However, this is basically a wood created by human intervention, due to the inevitable existence of chemicals. Especially the active ingredient Formaldehyde in the glue binds wood chips together. If businesses do not strictly control the production process, the number of Formaldehyde emissions will pollute the environment and cause cancer, gene mutation, eye, ear, nose, and throat diseases for users.
Conversely, if the content of Formaldehyde in industrial wood meets the standards of the industry, this is a great replacement for natural wood furniture, consumers can completely trust and trust.
