Today Ford revealed a new addition to its juggernaut truck lineup, the compact Maverick — a 4-door, 5-seat pickup. Designed for both versatility and efficiency, the 2022 Ford Maverick is powered by a front-wheel-drive hybrid drivetrain, and the automaker set the target of an EPA-estimated rating of 40 mpg city and a range of 500 miles on a full tank of fuel. (In America, the Maverick name was last used on a 2-door compact car from the 1970s that incorporated a longhorn on its nameplate; the moniker actually works better for an efficient pickup, so kudos to Ford for reviving it.)

Exterior Design
Featuring an upright, squared-off exterior design, the 2022 Ford Maverick maximizes interior space and pays homage to early Ford trucks. The front end differs from other Ford trucks by incorporating a bar across the grille that connects the standard LED headlights for a distinctive look. The 2022 Ford Maverick also employs a unibody design with no gap between the cab and the truck bed, and the bed rail caps extend up to the cab on either side of the rear window. The Maverick’s bed sides are low, so most adults can easily reach into the truck bed from the sides.

Compact Maverick
With a unibody design and an integrated 4.5-foot bed, the compact Maverick is smaller than other Ford trucks. The new pickup has an overall length of 199.7 inches — 11.1 inches short than Ranger and 32 inches shorter than F-150. Maverick also stands lower at a height of 68.7 inches — 2.4 inches less than Ranger and 6.9 inches less than F-150.

Hybrid Powertrain
Maverick’s hybrid drivetrain combines a 2.5-liter Atkinson-cycle 4-cylinder engine with an eCVT electronic continuously variable transmission, and a permanent magnet electric traction motor producing 94 kW and 173 lb-ft of torque. Total system output is 191 horsepower delivered to the front wheels — all-wheel drive is only offered with an optional 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine. The standard payload is 1,500 pounds, and Maverick has a tow rating up to 2,000 pounds with the hybrid drivetrain.

EcoBoost Option
Ford Motor also offers Maverick with a 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine producing 250 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque. The EcoBoost gets mated with an 8-speed automatic transmission; with this engine the truck has standard front-wheel drive or available all-wheel drive. When equipped with an optional 4K Tow Package, Maverick with the 2.0-liter EcoBoost can tow up to 4,000 pounds.

Beats a Honda Civic
“The Maverick product proposition is like nothing else out there. It’s a great-looking truck featuring four doors with room for five adults, a standard full-hybrid engine with city fuel economy that beats a Honda Civic, plenty of towing and hauling for weekend trips or do-it-yourself projects, and it starts under $20,000,” said Todd Eckert, Ford truck group marketing manager. “Maverick challenges the status quo and the stereotypes of what a pickup truck can be. We believe it will be compelling to a lot of people who never before considered a truck,” noted Eckert.

Maverick FLEXBED System
The 2022 Ford Maverick truck bed features the FLEXBED system, which has multiple organization and storage solutions including a multi-position tailgate, slots that use lumber to divide the bed into sections, 12 anchor points, and two 12-volt 20-amp prewired power sources for lighting or other electrical uses. An optional 110-volt 400-watt inverter is available to power a laptop or tailgate power accessories.

Cargo Capacity
The bed of the 2022 Ford Maverick can carry up to 1,500 pounds of payload. By sliding 2 x 4s or 2 x 6s into slots stamped in the bedsides, Maverick owners can create segmented storage, elevated floors and bike or kayak racks. And with the tailgate set in mid-position, Maverick will carry up to 18 sheets of 4 x 8-inch three-quarter-inch plywood, positioned on the wheel wells and the lip of the tailgate.

Maverick will be offered in XL, XLT and Lariat trim levels with the XL starting at $19,995. A Maverick First Edition Package will also be available during the first year of production, based on Maverick Lariat. This First Edition includes unique graphics on the hood and doors, a high-gloss black roof, a soft tonneau cover, body-color door handles, gloss-black mirror caps and gloss-black machined 18-inch wheels for the hybrid or 17-inch aluminum wheels for the gas version.

Maverick Interior
Inside, the 2022 Ford Maverick pickup offers smart technology, including a standard 8-inch touchscreen with standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. FordPass Connect is also standard with an embedded modem and Wi-Fi for up to 10 devices. FordPass allows the driver to use a smartphone to find the truck, check the fuel level, lock and unlock doors and start or turn off the engine.

Stylish and Spacious
The Maverick interior is stylish and spacious, with form following function to determine space utilization. “This customer wants simple, but not basic, and Maverick is all about thoughtful details executed well,” said Ford Color & Materials Design Manager Barb Whalen, who led the team that chose interior appointments. “We want this to have a straightforward, durable, honest, well-built feel. The interior was designed with function, purpose and ease of cleaning in mind to help make our customers’ lives better. We’re using unique textures and materials like reground carbon fiber for strength and visual interest,” Whalen observed.

Clever Storage Solutions
The Maverick interior is full of clever storage and useful features, such as door armrests with a split design to hold a one-liter water bottle upright, and door pockets that store a tablet or notebook.

Rear-Seat Storage
Another thoughtful feature of the 2022 Ford Maverick compact pickup is a bin underneath the rear seat to store items such as a toolbox, power tools, sports equipment or other items out of sight.

Ford Integrated Tether System
Maverick rear-seat passengers will benefit from the Ford Integrated Tether System — a slot at the back of the center console that can be fitted with different accessories for personalization. An available accessory pack includes cupholders, a storage bin, a trash bin, a cord organizer, double hooks for bags and under-seat storage dividers. More FITS accessories are in development, and Ford will provide dimensions for the FITS slot to aftermarket manufacturers so additional accessories can be produced.
