BY PARUL JAIN – Laminated products not only enhance the look of the space but also require low maintenance. On top of that, they give a rich, wood finish to the product at lower costs. It is an eco-friendly and inexpensive home interior décor alternative to hardwood.

Laminates are generally used for adding surface finish to flooring, MDF, particleboard, plywood, wall panels, and wooden furniture. They are expertly crafted by pressing different layers of plastic resins and flat paper. Its topmost layer features some colour or pattern.

Types of laminates

  • Industrial laminates – They are known for their unbeatable durability and strength. These laminates are resistant to damage. Plus, they are also fire-resistant, chemical-resistant and antibacterial, making them ideal for hospitals and other similar industries.
  • Decorative laminates – They are superior in terms of patterns and finishes. The aesthetic appeal of these laminates is incomparable. It can be used for adding a sophisticated touch to the home interior.
  • Post-formed laminates – If you are looking for a thinner version that can be used for wrapping the columns and tables, then these laminates are a perfect option for this purpose as they are comparatively flexible.
  • High-pressure laminates – A thicker and self-supporting variety, high-pressure laminate is required to be glued to the installation. Usually, Fevicol for wood is needed when it comes to installing these laminates on the surface.

Different types and uses of Fevicol

Fevicol comes in two variants – Fevicol MR and Fevicol SH. The latter is used for woodwork, and it gives a strong and lasting bond. The MR variant is formulated for decoupage, while SH is used on canvas, glass, plywood, laminate, etc.

Fevicol MR is ideally used in art and craft. It is generally available at stationery or art/craft shops. It is a milder adhesive and works fine for cloth, paper, and other delicate materials.

Fevicol SH comes with a combination of wood fibres giving a lasting and strong bond to the two surfaces. Available at carpentry shops, the SH has synthetic resin, which hardens once dried. Also, its consistency is comparatively thicker.

Method to apply adhesive for a perfect laminate installation

Laminate brings out the best look of the space when installed smoothly. Adhesive failure is one of the common problems people face when installing laminates to the product/walls/floors. Check out the pro tips/guidelines listed below to achieve the desired finish.

Avoid working on contaminated surfaces

It is essential to clean the surface before using Fevicol products for laminate installation. Surfaces with oil, grease, or any other impurities aren’t ideal for lamination until they are cleaned, cured, and treated to hold the adhesive.

There are several treatment options for surface preparation such as abrasion and washing. However, it is best to determine chemistry between the adhesive and substrate before choosing your ideal treatment method. Plus, verify the preparation technique with the help of an expert.

Ensure even adhesive coverage and proper application technique

It happens to be one of the significant causes of adhesive failure, mainly when applied manually. Laminates need an adequate quantity of adhesives for optimal bonding with the surface. Also, make sure to use good quality adhesive as it is the core element in laminate installation.

  • It is always best to apply at least two coats of adhesive on the surfaces.
  • Be extra careful while working on the edges of the product and sanded surface as they tend to be more porous.
  • Apply 2-3 coats of Fevicol glue on these areas.

Do not consider laminate installation in high humidity conditions

Environmental conditions such as high pH, humidity, and carbon dioxide levels increase chances of adhesive failure. These conditions are more likely to affect the curing for adhesives and slower the process. The strength of the adhesion largely depends on environmental conditions. Therefore, it is essential to perform a laminate installation test on a small surface area using Fevicol.

Apply a sufficient amount of glue on both the surfaces for a strong bonding

Wipe the surface using a damp cloth or smoothen it using sanding paper. Once the surfaces are ready for bonding, spread one or two coats (as needed) of the adhesive uniformly. Make sure the entire surface of both the products is adequately covered with the glue. Apply double or triple layers of the glue. An extra layer will strengthen the bonding and eliminate the possibilities of adhesive failure or non-uniform finish.

Now bond the two surfaces so that a seal is formed. Apply pressure on the surface to fix the bond and leave it to dry. Viola! You are done. Decorating the home interior with laminates is not rocket science. Just be careful during the application process.

Adhesives like Fevicol make the job of laminate application easier. Laminating the furniture improves product reliability, durability, performance, quality and aesthetics while offering design flexibility. Moreover, it also improves process productivity and reduces the manufacturing cost of the product. You can also get the best lamination ideas at HomeLane.
